About us
As part of the Department of Health’s initiative to return public pathology to public hospitals and ensure consistent, accessible .care for all Victorians, Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a Shared Pathology Service. Pathology services are provided from two main laboratories (The Alfred in Prahran and Monash Medical Centre in Clayton), and six branch laboratories (Casey Hospital, Dandenong Hospital, Moorabbin Hospital, Sandringham Hospital, Wonthaggi Hospital and Victorian Heart Hospital). In addition, there are 23 collection centres and rooms spread across South East Melbourne and South Gippsland, with the furthest one located in Yarram. The Shared Pathology Service is currently planning to expand services to Western Health by February 2026
About the role
The Scientist in this position is responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the Haematology and Transfusion department. This includes performance of all pathology tests provided by the department, staff training, evaluation and introduction of new tests, equipment maintenance, quality assurance, updating of laboratory manuals, and administrative duties.
Following training, and under the supervision of the Principal Scientist in Haematology and Transfusion Prahran, the incumbent will oversee the safe operation of the Haematology and Transfusion laboratory.
About you
- Bachelor’s degree in science, Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent is required.
- Higher qualifications such as M.Sc., or graduate membership or fellowship of any relevant professional body e.g. AIMS is highly desirable.
- At least 8 years’ experience in working in Haematology and Transfusion.
- Demonstrate in-depth expertise in Haematology and Transfusion.
- Demonstrated organisational and leadership skills.
- Sound verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer proficiency and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Class C driver’s license and willingness to travel to the various WH and Prahran sites as needed.
