Applications are invited for the position of Director of Victorian Adult Burns Service at Alfred Health.

The Department:

The Victorian Adult Burns Service at The Alfred hospital provides:

  • Acute care for all severely injured adult burns patients in Victoria; in particular, patients with large total body surface area burns, those with significant burns to the face and/or hands.
  • Secondary reconstructive surgery for burns patients in association with the plastic and reconstructive surgery unit
  • Post-operative rehabilitation and scar management services
  • Advice, assessment and treatment of outpatients with minor burns

VABS provides inpatient care in a specialist environment equipped to deal with the complexities of relatively uncommon major burn injuries, and is involved in clinical and collaborative research projects with various academic and other stakeholder groups. The unit has been at the forefront of the development and use of skin substitutes and cultured cells in the management of patients with life-threatening burn injury.

The multidisciplinary burn care team consists of medical, nursing and allied health care staff, including Director, Nurse Manager, Burns Liaison Nurse and Care Coordinator. Senior Allied Health Staff members include Senior Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and Dietician, Anaesthetics  & Pain Service, ICU, and Infectious Diseases personnel work closely with the service to ensure best-practice burn care.

The Position:

The Director of Victorian Adult Burns Service reports to the Program Director, Surgical Services, and is responsible for clinical and research leadership of the Alfred Burns Surgery Unit.

  • To provide strong management and leadership to the Burns Unit
  • To provide excellent clinical expertise for safe effective patient care.
  • To provide supervision to junior and senior medical and other relevant staff within the Unit/ Department.
  • To support Alfred Health’s quality, monitoring and improvement initiatives.
  • To support Alfred Health’s teaching, research and clinical governance programs.
  • To support the strategic priorities and values of Alfred Health.

Qualifications Required:

  • Appointee must be legally qualified medical practitioners, registered or registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) without conditions, undertakings or reprimands that could impact on their clinical practice.
  • Fellowship of the relevant college(s).
  • Demonstrable relevant knowledge and experience in Burns Surgery.
  • Meet Alfred Health requirements for appropriate credentialing and scope of practice in Burns Surgery; and,
  • Have experience in teaching and involvement in research.
