Alfred Pharmacy is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated pharmacist with expertise in psychotropic medication management to join the team as Senior Pharmacist – Psychotropic Stewardship.
About the Department
Alfred Health Pharmacy is well recognised for high quality and innovative patient- focused services, education and training programmes as well as significant research output. The service operates over 4 sites within Alfred Health, and continually advocates for postgraduate learning and research interests, with supportive partnerships and expert mentors available to foster staff development.
The department also has a leading Digital Health strategy, playing a pivotal role in managing the electronic medication management system within our comprehensive electronic medical record (Cerner), with an advanced level of integration linking this to the Pharmacy Dispensing (iPharmacy) and Automated Medication Storage systems (Omnicell). This is complemented by a strong clinical presence and a Centre for Medicine Use and Safety program to achieve a considered, safe and financially responsible approach to medication management within Alfred Heath.

About the Team
Alfred Mental & Addiction Health (AMAH) provides specialist care for people suffering from mental illnesses, and addiction disorders. The Program has a primary responsibility for residents of inner South Eastern metropolitan Melbourne, but cares for all patients seeking its services.
In response to various influences such as the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health Care System, broader public health sector transformation, changes to the Mental Health Act, workforce pressures and exponential growth in the demand for mental health services and building on the successes of existing Antimicrobial, Anticoagulant and Analgesic Stewardship models at Alfred Health, an innovative and collaborative Psychotropic Stewardship Program has been designed and established within the AMAH programme to provide oversight of psychotropic prescribing and ensure appropriate, safe and judicious use of psychotropic medicines across the organisation including developing a formal response to new legislation.
About the Role
The Senior Pharmacist – Psychotropic Stewardship is a clinical leadership position based within the Alfred Pharmacy Department. Working closely with the Lead Pharmacist AMAH, the post will provide progressive advanced level patient-centred care across AMAH and the organisation.
The post holder will be a key member of the multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to Psychotropic Stewardship across Alfred Health. A key role of the position is to actively optimise the appropriate use of Psychotropic medicines, reduce adverse events and improve patient care and their experiences across Alfred Health. This position will develop, lead and operationalize high quality clinical pharmacy initiatives and services to support optimal use of psychotropic medications in liaison with other stakeholders within/outside of AMAH in order to meet national and local objectives. The role also involves the provision of direct clinical care services within AMAH.
To be Successful, you will:
- Have an excellent understanding of clinical practice approaches to supporting patients with complex mental health issues, with relevant training and experience working in mental health settings
- Have strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
- Be able to demonstrate leadership and sound decision making skills
- Show an ability to lead team-based change
Qualifications and Experience
- Registered pharmacist with AHPRA
- Relevant post-graduate qualification in clinical pharmacy or equivalent highly desirable
- Completion of a specialist qualification, completion or progression towards a PhD in a relevant area of study or
- recognition as a subject matter expert within the field highly desirable.
- Extensive experience in the provision of an advanced clinical pharmacy service in Mental Health and Addiction and demonstrated understanding of contemporary practice in hospital clinical pharmacy services essential
