THE DEPARTMENT 

Alfred Care Group’s Physiotherapy Department provides acute physiotherapy services to the patients of The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital and subacute physiotherapy services to Caulfield Hospital.

The acute physiotherapy service is organised into five functional streams, namely: Intensive Care, Musculoskeletal, Respiratory, PAN (Progressive Illness, Aged Care and Neurosciences), and Sandringham.  The first four streams are located at The Alfred site, with the fifth and latter stream based at the Sandringham site. The physiotherapy service provides acute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: intensive care, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, orthopaedics, trauma, burns, lung transplantation, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary rehabilitation, neurology and neurosurgery, infectious diseases, haematology / oncology, general medicine, haemophilia and emergency.

Caulfield Hospital Physiotherapy Department provides an extensive range of inpatient and ambulatory services in the areas of rehabilitation, health of the older person and residential care services. The physiotherapy department has more than 50 staff with another 15 physiotherapists working in other ambulatory and community services on site.   The department provides subacute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: ABI, neurology, non-traumatic spinal cord injury, orthopaedics, amputees, burns, pain, Health of Older Person, aged care (GEM), transitional care and aged psychiatry.  The subacute physiotherapy service is organised into four functional streams: Neurological Rehabilitation, Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, Health of Older Persons (HOP) and ABI.

The Alfred Care Group Physiotherapy Department has more than 100 EFT and employs over 170 staff. The physiotherapy service has a proud history of clinical and academic excellence.  It remains strongly committed to further pursuing excellence in physiotherapy, through clinical research. The Alfred Care Group Physiotherapy Department is a major partner in the Alfred Care Group Physiotherapy Clinical Schools for both La Trobe and Monash Universities and in this role provides core and elective clinical placements for more than 50 undergraduate physiotherapy students.

THE ROLE 

The Senior Clinician Physiotherapist (post-COVID) is the lead position for a dedicated Allied Health-led multidisciplinary post-COVID service, managing patients with multiple complex symptoms post COVID-19 infection.

The team includes an occupational therapist, neuropsychologist, allied health assistant and medical team, who provide a time limited service to this population of patients. The Senior Clinician Physiotherapist (post-COVID) ensures patients who are referred to the service are triaged, screened, assessed and managed appropriately, with determination of appropriate onward referrals a key component of the service.

The Senior Clinician Physiotherapist (post-COVID Service) is responsible for collaborating with, and enhancing referrals through partnerships with internal referrers, General Practitioners and other primary care providers. As the senior Physiotherapist, they are responsible for managing and developing the provision of high-quality Physiotherapy service to the post-COVID patient cohort.

Other responsibilities for this lead role include:

• Co-ordination, and leadership, of team meetings to review patient progress, address service challenges, and identify service improvements
• Primary contact for the post-COVID service – managing escalations of care and ensuring effective solutions are provided
• Ensuring communication with relevant stakeholders, both internal to the organisation as well as externally to support referral optimisation and service visibility
• Leading audits, data collection, and reporting to key organisational stakeholder to monitor service metrics and outcomes
• Drive, and support, continuous service improvement through evidence-based practice, innovative care models and quality improvement initiatives
• Lead for developing and delivery relevant research opportunities with internal datasets, and in collaboration with external researchers where appropriate

As a senior physiotherapist in the Physiotherapy Respiratory Stream, this position may also assist in the delivery of the Physiotherapy service to other respiratory programs, in consultation with the Physiotherapy Respiratory Stream Leader and the Physiotherapy Managers, as appropriate dependent on skillset. They may play a role in the education of physiotherapy students; and/or the supervision and professional development of Grade 2, Grade 1 and AHA staff within the Physiotherapy Respiratory stream. As a senior leader in the Physiotherapy department, and post-COVID service, this position contributes directly to the development of individuals, the clinical team and the physiotherapy service through good leadership, teamwork and communication. 

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS 

• Registered to practice in the state of Victoria (AHPRA) 
• Demonstrated advanced knowledge and skills in the provision of physiotherapy services in the relevant areas of physiotherapy.   
• Demonstrated ability to plan and manage a caseload, including the co-ordination of other staff 
• Demonstrated ability to undertake quality initiatives 
• Demonstrated ability to supervise students and Grade 1 & 2 Staff 
• Demonstrated communication skills 
• Demonstrated time management skills
