The Department

Bayside Health - Alfred Care group’s Department of Infectious Diseases incorporates the Victorian HIV Service. It provides quaternary HIV Services in Victoria and is a national leader in HIV care, research and education. The clinical service provides acute inpatient and sub-acute care along with ambulatory care including specialists HIV clinics.  A large volume of care is provided in partnership with other health services across Victoria along with partnerships and networks with a wide range of community services. The service also consists of the HIV Outward Program which provides multidisciplinary support and secondary consultation to people with psychosocial complexity, or from priority and specialist populations. The Victorian HIV service is also a leader in HIV prevention providing access to biomedical prevention. The service works closely with people living with HIV and affected communities.  

The Role

The Senior Clinician is responsible for the provision of Social Work services to patients living with HIV and their families/significant others as part of the Bayside Health - Alfred Health care group Statewide HIV Service. The position works across the inpatient and outpatient hospital setting and within the community to provide a Social Work service to people living with HIV.

This position is part of the HIV Outward Program providing care and support to people living with who have multiple complex care needs. The HIV Outward Team is a multi-disciplinary team, and the Senior Clinician will work in collaboration with Nursing, Medical and Mental Health Clinicians.

The Senior Clinician is responsible for managing clinically complex cases referred to the HIV Outward service and requires a high level of clinical expertise in working with individuals with multiple complex needs. The position requires excellent knowledge of the psychosocial needs of individuals living with HIV, relevant community services and supports and comprehensive counselling skills related to chronic illness and adjustment to diagnosis. A sound understanding of trauma-informed practice and contemporary Social Work theory is essential. 

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Eligibility for membership of Australian Association of Social Workers. Bachelor of Social Work, or recognised equivalent
  • Minimum seven years of clinical social work experience, preferably working within a health-based context.
  • Working towards post graduate qualifications
  • Evidence of involvement in and/or understanding of principles of research and evaluation.
  • Advanced Computer literacy
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and with families, exhibiting initiative and facilitative qualities
  • Victorian driver’s licence
