Alfred Health
Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory, to inpatient and home and community-based services.
Alfred Health is seeking applications for the role of Addiction Medicine Registrar for 2024.
This role is a collaboration between Alfred Health Addiction Medicine and Department of General Medicine. The role can be undertaken full-time or in a flexible (part-time) training pattern. This role was established in 2023 after receiving accreditation from the RACP Chapter of Addiction Medicine in late 2022. It is also accredited for CORE Specialty training in General and Acute Care Medicine.
The role is suitable for an Addiction Medicine registrar with the goal of achieving fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Chapter of Addiction Medicine and/or General and Acute Care Medicine. The role can be offered in a 12 or 6 month block- pending the needs of the successful applicant(s). Registrars seeking this training experience as part of Psychiatry training are welcome to apply, noting these applications will only be considered if a suitable applicant is not found from the aforementioned trainee groups.
The registrar would be expected to assess people with a substance use disorder, provide opioid pharmacotherapy for people with opioid dependence, treat substance withdrawal, and provide relapse prevention/follow-up treatment for alcohol and other substance use disorders, often in consultation with the patients' General Practitioner and other people involved in their care. In the hospital inpatient service, the registrar will be involved with admitted patients, supporting initial assessments and management plans for the primary inpatient team and supporting discharge planning.
Supervision is provided that aligns with RACP requirements across both the Addiction Medicine and General Medicine requirements.
Testimonial from 2023 Trainee
“I have completed a 6 month rotation in Addiction Medicine through GACM at Alfred Health and can highly recommend it. The rotation provides an excellent grounding in the management of common substance use disorders, as well as exposure to complex cases and patients. Clinical duties are split between the inpatient CL service, which provides service to acute medical, surgical, emergency, psychiatry and ICU patients, as well as the outpatient Southcity Clinic, which includes the opportunity for longitudinal care of a cohort of ambulatory patients, including prescribing and administration of opiate agonist therapy.
The addictions team is able to offer personalised academic and professional support, with supervision and practical teaching available from specialists and nurse practitioners in addiction medicine and psychiatry. You will be working as part of an integrated multidisciplinary team of CNCs, drug and alcohol counsellors, who are all lovely. The unit is well-linked to the rest of Alfred Health, with opportunity for collaboration with any number of other teams from CL psychiatry or General Medicine, to acute pain services or palliative care, depending on your interests.”
