Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services.

The opportunity exists to commence a 12-month fellowship in Asthma & Allergy at Alfred Health in February 2024.

This role is usually undertaken as part of respiratory or allergy training, and focuses on developing additional clinical expertise in:

1.    Difficult Asthma- encompassing systematic assessment, evidence-based complex therapies including biologicals, and management of key comorbidities including upper airway disease, vocal cord dysfunction and dysfunctional breathing.

2.   Endoscopy of the upper airway for management of nasal polyposis and vocal cord dysfunction (usually following mannitol or odour provocation).

3.  Allergic disease- comprising aero-allergy, and depending on the appointee, other aspects of allergy.

Practically, this involves participation in five clinical sessions (three to four clinics, and a number of procedures) per week.

The position involves a substantial research component centred on clinical aspects of Difficult Asthma, vocal Cord Dysfunction, and biologics for Asthma & Nasal Polyposis. The fellow is expected to lead and be involved in multiple research publications. Evidence of appropriate research skills (commensurate to opportunity) is essential.

The fellow also assists in providing educational courses run through the Service. The fellow is able to participate in the educational sessions run through the Department (Respiratory Medicine).

Interested individuals should have a desire to expand their skillsets in asthma and allergy. They should have a high level of clinical competence and a demonstrable track record in clinical research. The ability to work in, and lead, teams is essential.
