The Department

Nutrition Services are provided at The Alfred, Sandringham and Caulfield Hospital’s. This position is based across all three sites. The joint Nutrition department is comprised of 40 EFT and approximately 48 people. The department is organised into seven clinical streams. The Nutrition Department has had a long and valued relationship within the Alfred, with the first dietitian being employed in 1930. The department has a proud history of clinical and academic excellence. The Nutrition department has a strong relationship with Monash and Latrobe University Nutrition Departments and is integral to clinical teaching and training of undergraduate dietitians. The Role

As the Senior Medical Specialty dietitian, you will co-lead the clinical operation of a small team of dietitians in the Medical Speciality stream of Alfred Health’s Nutrition Department and specifically support the care of patients in Heart Failure and Heart Transplant units. Alfred Health's Transplant Centre is the State-wide service for Orthotopic Heart Transplantation, and has been a leading heart transplant centre since the first transplant was performed at The Alfred Hospital in 1988. The centre coordinates an average of 23 heart transplants per year and covers three states. Alfred Health’s Dietetics and Nutrition department has a long history of providing nutrition care and a proud history of clinical and academic excellence.  Alfred Health’s Nutrition Department provides an integrated nutrition and dietetic service at The Alfred, Sandringham and Caulfield Hospitals. 


Clinical expertise in management of chronic conditions in both acute and ambulatory settings with a focus on heart failure/ translpant, strong leadership skills and a proven track record of co-ordination and implementation of quality initiatives in clinical nutrition are key aspects of this role. The position works with, and supports a team of dietitians supporting medical specialty services including cardiology, renal, endocrinology, infectious diseases and rheumatology.


About you 

You will be able to demonstrate the Alfred Health values and you will be passionate about the care of patients in Alfred Health Heart program (cardiology services).  You will possess excellent clinical skills, with at least 7 years post-graduate experience as a Dietitian and be eligible for membership of DA and APD credentialing. You will be committed to quality improvement and service development based on best practise.  You will also be organised and efficient, with a commitment to developing others. You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to advance patient-centre care in the Heart program. You will have a relevant postgraduate qualification or be progressing toward one.  Expertise and/or an interest in digital health, technologies and informatics is desirable.


You will also be provided with clinical supervision and explore opportunities to develop your clinical and leadership skills.  You will become part of the Dietetics and Nutrition Senior Team, with opportunities to engage in relevant research, quality work and professional development.


Skills/Qualifications Required 

  • Possesses qualifications providing eligibility for full membership of the Dietitians’ Association of Australia (DAA) and participation in the APD program
  • 7 years clinical experience, with specialist experience in management of chronic conditions in both Page 6 of 7 acute and ambulatory settings with a focus in heart failure/ transplant
  • Higher qualification in or proceeding towards in Nutrition, Management, Public Health & Research
