Alfred Mental Health and Addiction service is responsible for the operation of programs which support people with severe mental illness and distress residing in the Inner South Eastern area of Melbourne.

Services are provided by a number of teams located at the Alfred Hospital (Commercial Road, Prahran) and at St. Kilda Road Clinic, Alma Road CCU and PARC services and the Child & Adolescent Service located in Moorabbin. AMAH employs a number of lived experience peer workers across the program, including in the Adult Child and Youth settings, Inpatient Units, Residential Rehabilitation, PARC and Community Teams.

Consumer and Carer Peer Workers are integral members of the multidisciplinary team who possess expertise through a lived experience of mental health challenges. Through sharing wisdom from their own experiences, Consumer and Carer Peer Workers inspire hope and provide support to members of the multidiscipline teams and clients accessing IPU mental health services.


The Senior Consumer Peer worker role is responsible for the guidance of consumer peer workers on the IPU and integrating strong processes that support consumer perspective recovery.

This position will be required to provide 28 day post discharge support to consumers for 40% of their time.

An important part of this role is to highlight peer work specific functions and their importance and benefits across the IPU multidiscipline teams.

Reporting to the Allied Health Manager and Lived Experience Coordinator the Senior Consumer Peer Worker’s position will assist in the recruitment process of consumer peer workers, orientation and develop resources which supports their practice working in both the community and IPU setting. The Consumer Senior Peer Worker will be required to be self-motivated and directed.

They will demonstrate a sound ability to engage with a range of people and offer support and information to the peer worker team who are drawing on their own experience in supporting the consumers they are working with.

This position will work closely with the Lived experience Coordinator and the IPU excretive team to expand the development of consumer perspective care on the IPU.


  • Formal qualifications are not mandatory for this role but may be helpful (Certificate IV in Peer Work, Cert IV in Mental Health, Intentional Peer Support training)
  • Lived experience of your own mental challenges and a rich understanding of your own processes of recovery that inspires hope and belief in recovery
  • To work some weekends and outside traditional “9-5” working hours
  • A willingness to purposefully use your own story to help others further their own understanding of recovery
  • Be able to articulate the guiding principles, values and ethics of peer support work
