Alfred Health

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory, to inpatient and home and community based services.

  • Fixed term (12 months)
  • Full Time (76 hours per fortnight)
  • Alfred Campus; Department of Medicine/Oncology laboratories, Level 4 Burnet Tower

The Department

The Medical Oncology (MONC) Unit provides multidisciplinary management for adult cancer patients. The Unit is committed to improving the outcomes for cancer patients through effective and efficient service delivery, patient-centred innovations, and access to a comprehensive portfolio of clinical trials. As an academic medical unit affiliated with Monash University, the unit sits within the Department of Medicine of the Central Clinical School and links directly to research laboratories co-located on the Alfred precinct that support a growing program of clinically relevant basic and translational cancer research. Many of these research activities are enabled by the Alfred Cancer Biobank (ACB). Academic researchers of the MONC unit have world-leading expertise in research relating to melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, melanocyte biology, cancer immunology and immunotherapy.

The Role

The primary purpose of the position is to support the growth of translational research activities by staff of the MONC unit, specifically via laboratory activities of the translational immuno-oncology research stream. Supported by senior medical staff of the unit, the position is responsible for undertaking laboratory-based experiments, data generation and analysis, and provision of logistical support for biospecimen handling and processing. The position also facilitates the day-to-day organisation of the laboratory and will help ensure a compliant and safe research environment. Opportunities to develop or learn new skills in experimental techniques, analytical software, and project development will be available, tailored to level of experience.

You will be highly organised, motivated, and able to work independently under supervision to achieve defined research goals in a rigorous and timely manner. You will be able to demonstrate sound technical and analytical skills with common laboratory experimental techniques, and a willingness to learn new techniques as relevant to the project goals. The ability to identify learning needs and priorities for self-development will be essential for success in this role.

Skills

  • Demonstrated ability in routine biochemistry and cell biology techniques, animal handling, and analysis of routine experimental data.
  • Exceptional organisational skills, attention to detail, and quality of documentation.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with the ethical and legal requirements of research activities involving human biospecimens and data and animal models.
  • Proven experience in applying new technical methods, processes and systems effectively in a laboratory environment.

Benefits

The research officer will work in a well-supported and growing multi-disciplinary group, gaining technical expertise and knowledge in translational research with a focus on exciting new developments in cancer immunology. The role will encourage development of advanced skills in project management and strategic planning in a highly clinically-minded research context.
