The Role

Alfred Health requires an experienced lawyer to act as Deputy General Counsel.  Reporting to the General Counsel, the position will deliver sophisticated and strategic legal services to Alfred Health staff, including the Executive and Board.  The role will ensure that legal advice is sound, pragmatic, and accessible and assists staff to solve relevant clinical, operational and commercial issues.  The Deputy General Counsel will proactively engage with senior management and the Executive to assist staff to understand their legal obligations and manage legal risks effectively.  The Deputy General Counsel will also play a role in helping to develop and deliver organisation-wide responses to clinical, operational and commercial issues that have legal dimensions.


  • Degree in Law
  • At least eight years post-admission experience. 
  • Currently admitted as an Australian Legal Practitioner

The Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in delivery of pragmatic commercial legal advice
  • Significant expertise and experience in general commercial and contracts work
  • Proven ability to engage, work closely with and influence a diverse group of internal stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the health sector and its legal challenges would be considered favourably.
  • Expertise and experience in employment law and / or information technology procurement would be considered favourably.
