The Department

The Emergency service within Alfred Health sees approximately 115,000 patients per annum. Sandringham Emergency Department manages approximately 45,000 and The Alfred Emergency & Trauma Centre (E&TC) manages approximately 70,000 patients.

Sandringham Emergency Department is community focused and has an integrated Urgent Care Centre model of care. The department is a modern facility which has 13 treatment spaces capable of providing full bedside monitoring. In addition, we provide a 10-bed Short-stay Observation Unit (ESSU) for initial care of selected conditions up to 24 hours. Within the hospital we have access to inpatient General Medical, General Surgical, Gynaecology, Obstetric and Orthopaedic care. We have access to The Alfred Hospital for medical and surgical sub-specialty referrals. Paediatric patients account for 30% of our presentations within the Emergency Department supported by a Clinical Nurse Education team.

The Alfred Emergency & Trauma Centre (E&TC) has 80 treatment bays and is arbitrarily divided into 5 main clinical areas, including a 4 bed dedicated Behaviours of Concern secure unit. The Emergency Department will see all emergencies for assessment and stabilisation. In addition, we provide a 24-bed Short-stay Observation Unit (ESSU) for initial care of selected conditions up to 24 hours.

The Alfred Hospital is a major adult tertiary referral hospital and is well known as one of Australasia’s busiest Trauma Centre. In addition, it is home to many Victorian statewide services:

  • Trauma (adult)
  • Hyperbaric Medicine
  • Burns (adult)
  • HIV Medicine
  • Cystic Fibrosis (adult)
  • Haemophilia (adult)
  • Heart & Lung Transplant
  • Critical Neurosurgery

Alfred Health aims to ensure all patients receive timely, high-quality care consistent with their clinical needs. This principle applies to all our patients, those admitted because of emergency, elective surgery patients and those treated as outpatients through our specialist clinics. For our emergency patients this involves patients being assessed by a senior doctor who will provide their definitive care as soon as possible.

Our care delivery system is based on a multi-disciplinary team approach to care. Each shift is staffed by a complement of both senior and junior medical and nursing staff; this enables a safe, supported practice environment to facilitate safe patient care delivery and experiential learning opportunities for all staff. Medical and nursing staff work collaboratively in the comprehensive assessment, person centred care planning and delivery of treatment of our patients for the entire duration of their stay

The service of Emergency Care within Alfred Health offers a supportive team environment, access to ongoing education by supporting further tertiary studies as appropriate.
