The Department

The Central Clinical School encompasses the Departments of Clinical Sciences, Melbourne Sexual Health Clinic, Clinical Haematology, Immunology and Pathology, Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology, Diabetes, Allergy and Respiratory Medicine and Psychiatry. It is located at the Alfred Hospital precinct in Melbourne, known as AMREP (Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct). The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with ideally a strong record of clinical research and strong interests in chronic lung disease and supportive care. The incumbent will provide support to the Group Lead, with the responsibility of coordinating and assisting in research studies, and opportunities for authorship on publications, research development.

Key responsibilities

Specific duties may include:

  • The conduct of research either as a member of a team or independently, and the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from that research
  • Engaging and working with patients, carers and clinicians to complete specific research tasks and projects; this may include senior nursing clinical tasks such as patient education and lung function tasks
  • Working with other clinicians and researchers to foster a wide collaborative research network
  • Contribution to the preparation of research proposal submissions to external funding bodies
  • Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance and presentation at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise
  • Administrative functions primarily connected with the area of research of the academic
  • Development of a limited amount of research-related teaching materials for health professionals, patients or carers
  • Occasional contributions to teaching in relation to their research project(s)
  • Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is connected and/or at departmental, school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a limited number of committees
  • Other duties as directed from time to time 

Qualifications/Experience

  • The appointee will have postgraduate qualifications or multiple years of experience working in respiratory medicine, chronic disease management or palliative care.
  • Demonstrated statistical analysis and manuscript and research proposal preparation skills; including a solid track record of refereed research publications 
  • Experience in successfully supervising, mentoring and coaching to support the development of research staff and/or a demonstrated trajectory of leadership capability
  • The ability to work both independently in a research environment and as part of an inter-disciplinary research team
  • High level organisational skills, with demonstrated capacity to establish and achieve goals and meet deadlines
  • Excellent written communication and oral communication skills
  • A demonstrated awareness of the principles of confidentiality, privacy and information handling
  • A demonstrated capacity to work in a collegiate manner with other staff in the workplace
  • Advanced computer skills with experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and REDCap; specific experience managing a research database and working with a range of analytical software such as SPSS or other statistical package
  • Experience conducting research involving participants with chronic health conditions
  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative research and conduct of systematic reviews
