The Department of Neuroscience was established in 2017, in strong partnership with the Alfred Health, as the first dedicated University academic department of neuroscience in Australia. The mission of the Department is to undertake high quality, internationally significant, research, research training and teaching across a broad range of basic and clinical neuroscience fields, and to translate these to improve treatment and outcomes of patients with neurological diseases. It has grown to now have 24 research groups, over 200 staff and students (including >40 PhD students), >$20M in research income in 2020 with an additional >$3.5 M in clinical trials income. The Department undertakes basic/fundamental and clinical neuroscience research and research training relevant to a broad range of neurological and related disciplines, including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and other neuroinflammatory conditions, neuroophthalmology, headache and pain, neuroimaging, neuromuscular disorders, Parkinson’s Disease, dementing disorders, neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders, brain tumours, stroke and traumatic brain injury/spinal cord injury.
The Senior Biobank and Database Manager is an opportunity to lead a growing infrastructure of biobanking and clinical research databases/registries in the Department, including responsibility for leading a team of two junior scientists. This includes Biobanks and clinical databases collected from patients treated by the Alfred Brain Units (Neurosurgery, Neurology, Epilepsy, MSNI and MAPrc), and samples/data from collaborators of researchers in the Department of Neuroscience. The Senior Biobank and Database Manager will take overall responsibility for the efficient and quality operations of the neuroscience biobanks and databases/registries, ensure appropriate ethical approval for the sample and data collection and use of the samples, assist with relevant HREC applications, assist with clinical data collection and sample processing, and supervise the junior biobank and database scientists in the team.
