  • Permanent Role—Ongoing 
  • Part time— 64 hours per fortnight

The Postgraduate Certificate of Cardiac Care is delivered in partnership with La Trobe University.  The course is designed to prepare nurses for speciality practice at an advanced level and offers an opportunity to advance your career in cardiac nursing. 

The course is delivered using a blended learning approach with a combination of online learning, face-to-face study days, and self-directed learning.  The face-to-face study days are delivered on campus at the Alfred Clinical School.  A key feature of undertaking the course at The Alfred is the opportunity to gain clinical experience caring for patients with a broad range of acute cardiac conditions in a variety of specialties including interventional cardiology, advanced heart failure, mechanical assist devices, cardiac transplantation, valvular disease, and cardiothoracic surgery.  In addition, students are supported by qualified and experienced Clinical Nurse Educators, and senior clinicians.


Ward 3 East at The Alfred Hospital is a 29-bed acute cardiac unit which forms part of the comprehensive cardiovascular service operating across the third floor. Our unit specialises in the management of critically unwell patients requiring Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Heart Failure services, inclusive of the state-wide transplantation and mechanical circulatory support service.


As a clinical nurse, your practice will be essential in providing excellence in cardiac nursing. You understand the values of patient-centred care and are experienced in building respect and trust with your patients, their carers and your colleagues. As a Registered Nurse within 3 East, you will be accountable for establishing and evaluating patient's care plans in partnership with the patient, their carers and other members of the multidisciplinary health care team.
