The Department

The Social Work Department operates in accordance with the philosophy and goals of The Alfred. A focus on quality of life and participation in care is a primary goal of the Department. Social Work aims to identify and address the psychosocial impacts of illness and hospitalisation for patients and their families by providing a range of services which increase quality of life and participation in care. Social Work also assists patients and their families with a smooth transition from hospital to home.

The Role 

The Grade 2 Social Worker in Alfred Outpatient Cancer Services is responsible for the provision of advanced social work services to outpatients and their families/significant others within the Alfred Cancer service. This role will incorporate working within The Alfred Social Work Department and The Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre.  The worker will be required to consult with colleagues and staff from other disciplines on relevant issues as required and to provide advanced casework expertise.  The worker will be required to complete comprehensive psycho-social assessments, ensure linkages with relevant cancer, community and support services. Advanced counselling and adjustment counselling skills will be relevant to this role as this will be required for patients, families/ significant others within the Alfred Cancer Service.  

The Social worker will also be required to perform work that requires special knowledge and depth of experience of Family Violence/ Child Protection/ NDIS processes and supports. An understanding of working with an Electronic medical record will also be desirable for this role.

This role is a newly created unique position to promote continuous care for Cancer patients in the home and within Alfred Health.

Skills/Qualifications Required 

Essential

  • Bachelor of Social Work, or recognised equivalent
  • Eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and with families, exhibiting initiative and facilitative qualities       
  • Knowledge of current Legislation and Policies in relation to Social Work in a hospital setting
  • Eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers
  • Victorian Drivers Licence

Desirable

  • Working towards or Postgraduate qualifications in Social Work or a related field
  • Knowledge/experience in working with patients with cancer
  • Hospital-based work experience
  • Sound IT Skills
