Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory, to inpatient and home and community based services.
Our Cardiac Fellowship offers experience in most subspecialties of anaesthesia with a strong emphasis on Cardiac Anaesthesia.
The Fellowship at the Alfred provides a unique and comprehensive exposure to cardiac anaesthesia, as we provide anaesthesia for all adult cardiothoracic procedures and we also have a very busy heart and lung transplantation service.
The Cardiac Fellow is expected to develop advanced skills in the following:
- Preoperative patient evaluation and interpretation of cardiovascular and pulmonary diagnostic tests
- Management of cardiopulmonary bypass and pharmacological and mechanical haemodynamic support
- Advanced level perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography skills
- Research skills
The Cardiac Fellowship is a 12 month appointment. The working week will approximately comprise:
- Cardiac anaesthesia (including echo) – minimum one and half days per week
- Research – half day per fortnight
- Trans-oesophageal echocardiography – half day per week
- Non-cardiac anaesthesia
The Cardiac Fellow will also be expected to participate actively in transoesophageal echocardiography review meetings and cardiac educational meetings, in addition to participation in the weekly Department Registrar Teaching and Quality Improvement Meeting.
Heart and Lung Transplantation
The Cardiac Fellow will obtain experience in all aspects of Heart and Lung Transplantation. This includes the management of patients with mechanical assist devices as well as the management of the organ donor (The Alfred currently performs approximately 100 lung transplants and 15-20 heart transplants a year).
The Cardiac Fellow will be expected to acquire expertise in this area and move toward the SCA/ASE Exam in Perioperative Echo.
The Fellow is expected/encouraged to participate in a research project related to echo or another aspect of cardiothoracic anaesthetic practice, the topic of which would be by negotiation, balancing the Fellow’s interest with the research agenda of the Department.
