The Department of General Surgery includes the Colorectal, Oesophagogastric and Bariatric, Hepatopancreatico-Biliary and Breast / Endocrine surgical units at The Alfred, and General Surgery unit at Sandringham Hospital. It cares for both in and out-patients with general surgical needs and is a leader in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive range of research, quality and undergraduate educational programs. It provides both elective and emergency surgical services.


To provide private secretarial support to the Professor / Director of General Surgery and secretarial assistance to the Heads of the five General Surgery Units, namely the OGB, HPB, BES, BRS and Sandringham.

To provide private secretarial support to the Heads of Vascular Surgery and Renal Transplant Surgery. To provide secretarial services for the administrative, managerial, financial, and academic functions of the Department of General Surgery. Some general accounts work is required as is, on occasion, some general reception work.


  • Previous experience and proven skills as a Senior or Private Secretary preferably within a public hospital or health setting
  • Proven typing, audiotyping, and medical terminology skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word for Windows, Excel, Outlook, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint, and internet search / browsing
  • Proficient in Redcap and Filemaker Pro.
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills as well as experience in multi-tasking
  • Proven minute taking skills
