Suitably qualified applicants are invited to apply for the 2021 Trauma Fellow position within the Trauma Service located at Alfred Health.
This role has the key responsibility for co-ordinating the day to day work of the Unit and supervision of more junior medical staff and managing their duties. The placement is designed to provide appropriate exposure and experience to enable the doctor to attain the required skills and knowledge for that term in that discipline.
The clinical role of the fellow and registrar clearly overlap; however, the fellow should act as an adviser and mentor to the registrar (and also resident).The fellow and registrar are expected to interchange their clinical duties to ensure that both training and patient care is optimal. The Trauma Surgical Fellow is required to hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) or equivalent. The position is for a period of 6 or 12 months. The Fellow will work with 8 Trauma Registrars from General Surgery (SET positions accredited by RACS), Emergency Medicine (registrar positions accredited by ACEM), Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine. There are also 7 HMOs working for the Trauma Service.
The Trauma Surgical Fellow’s role includes rostered duty covering day, evening, weekend and overnight periods. Duties include the reception, assessment, resuscitation and ongoing management of acute trauma patients, within a multi-disciplinary setting (involving specialised emergency physicians, general surgeons and specialty surgeons, interventional radiologists and anaesthetists).
