The Aged Psychiatric Services provides inpatient and community assessment, treatment and ongoing management for people generally over the age of 65 years with psychological, behavioural, psychiatric or memory-related conditions for persons residing in the Inner South East region of Melbourne.
The Service consists of:
A 15 bed inpatient unit known as Baringa, which is a purpose-built aged persons mental health unit providing assessment, treatment and management for acute psychiatric illness that is not amenable to community care and support. The average length of stay in Baringa varies from 20 to 30 days. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) sessions are usually conducted on Mondays and Fridays as required.
A community based Mobile Aged Psychiatry Service.(MAPS). This service receives referrals from various agencies and families, and provides community based assessment and treatment services, including ongoing care via case management. It also includes a Consultation and Liaison (C/L) team providing short term assessment and assistance to patients currently in Caulfield Hospital
The Carer Consultant has a lived experience of carers’/families’ needs in mental health services. The Carer Consultant will provide education and information on carer experiences, needs and support to Aged Psychiatry staff, community groups and other relevant service providers.

Lived experience of cares’/families’ needs in mental health services
Good knowledge of the mental health service system and the issues that carers and consumers face.
Well-developed communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
Strong leadership skills.
Ability to work as part of a team, representing the carer perspective in a balanced and constructive manner.
An understanding of the rights and responsibilities of consumers, families and carers and clinicians.
Computer skills – Word documents and spreadsheets, internet and email
Ability to understand the needs of consumers, carers, clinicians and the service as it relates to the carer.
Current driver’s license.
