The Department

Monash School of Public Health & Preventive Medicine is a teaching and research unit of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and is centred at the Alfred Hospital Campus beside the Burnet Institute. It plays a prominent role in public health medicine in Australia. The Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine (DEPM) is the largest member of the School. The core skills of the department relate to epidemiology (the study of the distribution, risk factors and causes of disease) and its application to problems in clinical medicine and public health. The department provides a strong research capability in a series of areas of particular relevance to infectious disease control including large database skills, emergency care research, therapeutics (including clinical trials, post-marketing surveillance and pharmaco-economics).

The Role

A full time Clinical Liaison Officer position has become available at the Alfred Health site. The role will be supporting the STAREE (http://www.staree.org.au/) trial, a double-blind, randomised primary prevention trial investigating whether daily active treatment of Atorvastatin versus placebo will enhance disability free survival (death, dementia and disability) and prevent major cardiovascular outcomes in healthy participants aged 70 years and over.  The trial is primarily funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia.  

Skills 

This is a unique opportunity to be involved in this world first trial. The Clinical Liaison Officer provides key support to clinical research projects undertaken by the Clinical Trial Centre. The main responsibility of the Clinical Liaison Officer will be to recruit general practitioners as co-investigators, providing them with study related information and then assisting the GPs to locate, recruit and manage study participants. The successful candidate will be supporting other sites around Australia including Melbourne, Regional Victoria, Hobart, South Australia and Sydney. Other locations may be required as well.
