Alfred Health

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory, to inpatient and home and community based services.

Alfred Psychiatry is seeking hospital medical officers (HMOs) who will be post-graduate year 2 or beyond in 2020, and are interested in broadening their experience and knowledge of psychiatry, to fill five (5) psychiatry HMO positions from February 2020.

The new “Psychiatry HMO Training Pathway” will provide the opportunity to work in a combination of rotations including:

  • Headspace Youth Mental Health Service,
  • Adult Community Mental Health Clinic,
  • Psychiatric Inpatient Unit
  • Night rotation (a week of nights followed by a week off; approximately 6 weeks of nights in total.)

This diverse range of clinical placements within a recovery-focused service has a strong emphasis on collaborative care and proactive engagement of families and carers The nights’ rotation is supported by weekly individual clinical supervision from a consultant psychiatrist.

To support this new pathway into psychiatry training, Psychiatry HMOs are encouraged to attend the weekly “Foundational Elements in Psychiatry Training Program” and clinical interview skills tutorials also offered to all first year psychiatry trainees.

There are a range of other educational opportunities also open to all Psychiatry HMOs (such as the Grand Round, Journal Club, Reading Group)

Alfred Psychiatry greatly values junior medical staff wellbeing and has a strong focus on supporting our junior doctors, thus Psychiatry HMOs have a specific monthly peer support group tailored to their needs.

The Alfred has, and will continue to support Psychiatry HMOs seeking to apply for RANZCP registrar positions.

Alfred Psychiatry values an active and engaged psychiatry registrar body with the present group of 45 registrars engaged in fellowship training, including those training in a number of subspecialty certificates in adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, consultation and liaison psychiatry, aged psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and generalist psychiatry. Psychiatry HMOs can expect to be well supported by this large, enthusiastic and dynamic group of trainees.
