The Department

The Australian Centre for Blood Diseases (ACBD) is a well-known leader in blood disease research and education, one of the country’s largest blood-related research and clinical centres.

 Working in a state-of-the-art facility, we are setting new benchmarks in diagnosing and treating blood conditions. Our emphasis is translation into the clinic - turning our discoveries into better patient outcomes.  It is located at the Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct (AMREP) in Prahran

The Role

The candidate will undertake laboratory research aimed at increasing our understanding of blood diseases, specifically Acute Myeloid Leukemia and options for better and more effective treatments. 

Our ideal candidate will be motivated, with a high attention to detail and able to work well within a team environment and with minimal supervision.



  • Assist in conducting experiments, including preparation, sampling, data collection and analysis and preparing results and reports. This will include proficiency in a range of relevant laboratory techniques: tissue culture, flow cytometry, molecular biology techniques and general laboratory tasks.
  • Perform and assist in animal (mouse/rat) experimental procedures, health monitoring, record keeping and animal ethics.
  • Due to the nature of the work, it will be necessary sometimes to work out of hours, either on weekdays or on weekends.
  • Assist in preparing documentation (e.g. towards grant applications, research and conference papers), including undertaking literature reviews and data analysis
  • Provide administrative and financial management support for research projects and programs, including maintaining/using information systems, databases, websites and record‑keeping systems
  • Keep abreast of developments, activities and protocols in area of expertise through liaison with staff and peers, reading relevant literature and attending meetings and seminars
  • Comply with University policy, procedure and protocols relevant to the Department of Clinical Haematology/Australian Centre for Blood Diseases
  • Other duties as directed by the supervisor such as maintaining rodent breeding colonies and animal (mouse) experimentation
