Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory, to inpatient and home and community based services.

Alfred Psychiatry offers a unique and diverse career in Mental Health where we encourage you to Be Your Best!

Alfred Psychiatry is responsible for the operation of services which focus on people with a severe mental illness residing in the Inner South Eastern area of Melbourne.

Services are provided by a number of teams located at the Alfred Hospital (Commercial Road, Prahran) and at St. Kilda Road Clinic, Waiora Clinic in Armadale, Alma Road CCU in St. Kilda and the Child & Adolescent Service located in Moorabbin

Alfred Mental & Addiction Health (AMAH) provides an area mental health service for people with a severe mental illness residing in the Inner South Eastern area of Melbourne, and child and youth services to patients and families in the southern metropolitan area.  Addiction services are provided in the general hospital and in the community.

AMAH is a major provider of postgraduate training in psychiatry, and employs six HMOs and 40 registrars based at 12 sites across southern Melbourne.  Subspecialty streams include Child & Adolescent, Youth, Adult, Aged, Addiction and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. Psychotherapy training is a key component of the program and is delivered through both individual and group supervision.

We are now seeking a psychiatrist to provide psychotherapy supervision for registrars. The psychiatrist psychotherapy supervisor will assist registrars in meeting the requirements for psychotherapy training in basic and advanced training of the FRANZCP.

The requirements of the position are as follows:

·         4 hours per week

·         VMO Psychiatrist (Psychotherapy Supervision)

·         Option to see the trainee in your own consulting rooms (if located within a 5 km radius of the Alfred Hospital)

·         Assist trainees to develop good psychotherapy skills, select appropriate cases, and to formulate cases

The main focus will be to provide supervision for the Psychotherapy Written Case (PWC), in which psychiatry trainees are required to treat a patient within a brief psychodynamic framework for no less than 40 sessions.  Supervision must be provided no less frequently that fortnightly to ensure that psychotherapeutic treatment is safe and effective. Trainees will be expected to select appropriate patients, formulate cases competently from a number of perspectives including the psychodynamic, and develop good psychotherapy skills. The supervisor will provide guidance in preparing the PWC.

The psychiatrist will liaise with the Director of Postgraduate Education, AMAH, to provide feedback about the performance of registrars in this task, to recommend remedial measures when performance fails to meet expectations, and to plan supervision on an annual basis.

Practical considerations are that the supervisor can either see the trainee in their own consulting rooms (if located within a 5 km radius of the Alfred Hospital) or alternatively arrangements can be made for the use of a room at a Community Clinic located close to the Alfred Hospital.

Applicants must be legally qualified practitioners, registered or registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and a Fellow of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. They must be accredited FRANZCP supervisors and Accredited Members of the Faculty of Psychotherapy.

Enquiries please contact Director, Alfred Mental & Addiction Health, A/Prof Simon Stafrace or Dr Tania Stavovy, Director Postgraduate Training Alfred Psychiatry on 03 9076 2218.

Applications close:  8 March 2019
