The Department

Ward 3 East at the Alfred hospital is a 24-bed acute cardiac unit which forms part of the comprehensive cardiovascular service operating across the third floor. Our unit specialises in the management of critically unwell patients requiring Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Heart Failure services, inclusive of the state-wide transplantation and ventricular assist device service.

Our team has a strong vision for patient centred care and leading the way in quality improvements to ensure our patients are provided with exceptional care.

Ward 3 East delivers patient care through a multidisciplinary team approach and shared governance, which is facilitated by daily ward rounds, and multidisciplinary team meetings.

The Role

As Nurse Manager of 3 East you will report to the Clinical Service Director, Alfred Heart & Lung and partner in the development of staff to deliver excellence in clinical practice, managing clinical risk and implementing systems and processes to improve patient access to services and outcomes of care.  This is a full time management role with the accountability to lead change and influence a working culture to achieve a higher standard of person-centred care throughout the entire service.


  • Ideally, you will hold a postgraduate qualification in critical care.
  • Ability to lead and manage change
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to motivate individuals and groups to achieve commonly held goals
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people to problem solve in a solution-focused manner
  • Ability to work effectively and provide support to nursing staff, senior medical staff and a range of other health professionals and support staff
