The Alfred Department of Intensive Care is a state of the art 65 bedded unit that treats over 3000 patients per year. 

The Alfred ICU provides Victorian state services for heart and lung transplantation (including paediatric lung transplantation), short- and long-term mechanical cardiac device, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), burns and hyperbaric medicine. The Alfred is one of two centres providing state services for adult trauma, HIV and bone marrow transplantation (autologous and allogeneic). In addition most other surgical and medical subspecialties are represented in the case-mix in keeping with the quaternary referral centre status of The Alfred Hospital. 

The Alfred Department of Intensive Care is accredited for 2 core years of training as stipulated by the College of Intensive Care Medicine. There is an extensive consultant led education program including dedicated protected weekly teaching sessions for junior and senior registrars aimed at developing both technical and non-technical skills. This program includes weekly first and second part CICM exam training, journal club sessions, simulation training, bronchoscopy training and echocardiography training. This role is that of a Registrar within the Intensive Care Department, located at Alfred Health, or on rotation to other Health Services.    

This role has the key responsibility for co-ordinating the day to day work of the Unit and supervision of more junior medical staff and managing their duties.  The placement is designed to provide appropriate exposure and experience to enable the doctor to attain the required skills and knowledge for that term in that discipline. In addition, skills progression should assist the registrar to meet the requirements of specialist training programs such as the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM).   

There are vacancies for Registrars for positions commencing in February and August 2025.  CICM trainees or registrars applying for CICM admission for 2025 are encouraged to apply.
