The Department

The Endocrinology and Diabetes department at Alfred Health is dedicated to providing the highest standard of evidence-based care for individuals living with diabetes. At the heart of our service is a multidisciplinary team of highly skilled healthcare professionals who work collaboratively to provide personalised care addressing the unique needs and goals of each individual. Our knowledgeable team are compassionate and empathetic, taking time to listen, educate, and empower individuals to actively participate in their diabetes management, promoting a sense of ownership over their health. Our team is committed to supporting our patients in achieving optimal health and improving their quality of life. We pride ourselves on delivering evidence-based practices. Our treatment protocols and recommendations reflect the latest scientific research and clinical guidelines. We constantly stay updated on the advancements in diabetes care and technology, allowing us to provide our patients with the most effective and innovative treatments available and are committed to ongoing quality improvement initiatives. We continually evaluate our practices, outcomes, and patient satisfaction to identify areas for enhancement and ensure that our services remain at the forefront of diabetes care and management. The department is also actively involved in research.

The Diabetes Nurse Education Service provides comprehensive care to the following areas:

  • Acute inpatient care for all types of diabetes
  • General advice and education regarding technology support for blood glucose management
  • Continuous Glucose Monitoring Service (CGM)
  • Insulin Pump Service
  • Insulin dose adjustment service
  • Sub-specialist outpatient care including: Diabetes Connecting Care (Type 2 management in collaboration with community services), Osteoporosis, Cystic Fibrosis Diabetes, Lung Transplant, Gestational Diabetes, High Risk Foot Service (HRFS), Young Adult Diabetes Service (YADS)

Position Summary

The Manager is a professional and clinical leader in Operations and Nursing Services playing a pivotal role in meeting broader organisational imperatives. The Manager operationalises the core values of Nursing at Alfred Health by ensuring a safe and supportive environment for patients and staff. She/He is accountable for developing staff to deliver excellence in clinical practice and is responsible for managing clinical risk and implementing systems and processes to improve patient outcomes. The Manager facilitates effective patient access to clinical services managing both financial and human resources to meet these needs. Every Alfred Health nurse must practice in accordance with the Alfred Health Nursing Professional Practice Framework. The Professional Practice Framework defines the elements of nursing practice that improve the care and experience of our patients and aligns with the Patient’s Come First Strategy. It is comprised of five domains that are crucial to maintain standards, lead change and add value to healthcare. These domains are Care, Leadership, Professional Development, Workforce, Research and Informatics.

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Registered as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Degree in healthcare / business management or working towards same.
  • Demonstrated expertise and skills in Diabetes
  • Post graduate certificate in Diabetes Education/Management
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other services and departments across the hospital and community
  • Ability and willingness to develop others
  • Recent extensive clinical nursing experience in relevant health service.
  • Maintains credentialing with Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA)
  • Current and satisfactory Police Check Current and satisfactory Working with Children Check
