Department Summary

The Department of Infectious Diseases at the Alfred Hospital is one of the largest and most comprehensive infectious diseases clinical services in the country. It is also an academic Department within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, School of Translational Medicine , Monash University and is a premier centre for clinical and biomedical research and education. The Department offers expertise in general infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, hospital-acquired infections and antimicrobial resistance, infection prevention, viral hepatitis, sexually-transmitted infections, and infections in immunocompromised hosts. We are geographically located within a vibrant Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct, which provides a seamless transition between clinical care, research and education. Position Summary

The Department of Infectious Diseases have a number of clinicians and researchers who lead or are involved in research studies which involve laboratory research, including standard diagnostic microbiology methods, clinical trials research and microbial genomics. The Department of Infectious Diseases clinical service also have a number of specialist clinical tests that are undertaken through the laboratory. The position provides a research liaison role within the laboratory ensuring close integration with the Diagnostic Microbiology and Clinical Research Units.  The role is also responsible for the coordination and technical direction of sample processing in industry and investigator-initiated studies along with research assays in microbiological, genomic and immunological studies. The role will provide co-ordination, management and direction of the activities and laboratory research staff in the Department of Infectious Diseases research laboratory. The role will oversee the operations of the laboratory to lead the quality and safety of the research undertaken and ensure research outcomes and timelines are met. They will be key to developing and expanding the laboratory and oversee expenditure and project cost allocation within the laboratory.  The role will oversee laboratory equipment, assisting in procurement processes, ordering equipment and supplies and overseeing equipment maintenance.

Qualifications and Experience Required

Qualifications

  • Possess a Bachelor Degree in Science, Possess a Master degree from a recognised university

Experience and Skills

  • At least 7 years’ experience as a scientist At least 5 years of relevant experience managing staff and activity
  • Experience and proven ability to manage the infrastructure resources of a laboratory effectively
  • Sound knowledge of laboratory quality control
  • Proven ability to manage a large research portfolio and undertake research related tasks in a timely and effective manner
  • Knowledge of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, Good Clinical Practice and Guidelines governing clinical trials.
